Constipation is usually caused by a lack of fibre in the diet, however it can also be caused by not in taking enough fluid, a change in eating habits, ignoring the call to stool or lack of exercise. Drugs may also be a cause of constipation, especially opioid analgesics, such as Codeine and antacids that contain aluminium salts.

Diarrhoea is usually self-limiting but people may seeking treatment because of its inconvenience.
