Constipation: The definition of constipation is “the infrequent passage of hard, dry stools”. Many people believe they are constipated, if they are not able to go to the toilet everyday, so it is best to get medical advice. If too much water is absorbed by the bowel, constipation can occur. Constipation is usually caused by a lack of fibre in the diet, however it can also be caused by not in taking enough fluid, a change in eating habits, ignoring the call to stool or lack of exercise. Drugs may also be a cause of constipation, especially opioid analgesics, such as Codeine and antacids that contain aluminium salts.

Diarrhoea: Diarrhoea is characterised by the passing of watery, unformed stools at frequent intervals. Acute diarrhoea is a problem that affects most people at some point in their life and tends to be caused by viruses (Rotavirus) and bacteria (Shigella, Salmonella Species and E-Coli), which has been ingested with contaminated food and/or drink. Non-Microbiological causes can lead to Diarrhoea, which includes stress, certain medicines (antibiotics), hot spicy food, change of climate and excess alcohol intake. Diarrhoea is usually self-limiting but people may seeking treatment because of its inconvenience.

Indigestion: Indigestion is a term used to describe a range of symptoms that include flatulence, heart burn, nausea & vomiting, discomfit, belching and distension. The condition can be due to insufficient digestion or delayed emptying from the stomach.
