Coughs & Colds

Colds: Colds are contagious infection within the passages of the upper respiratory system. This can be caused by one or more of a 100 different types of viral infectious agents (Rhinovirus). The symptoms for colds include sore throat, fever, sneezing, headaches, general discomfort, runny/stuffy nose and red and watery eyes.

Influenza: Flu is a viral infection, the symptoms include aches and pains, coughs and fever and is often followed by tiredness, these symptoms generally last 3-5 days.

Coughs: Coughing is a protective reflex that assists to clear the airways of irritants and obstructions. This reflex may be voluntary (a deliberate action to help clear the lungs and throat) or involuntary (chest infections, dust, foreign bodies and smoke). There are 2 different types of coughs; productive and non-productive.

Productive Coughs: brings up phlegm or mucus and can be described as ‘Loose’ or ‘chesty’.

Non-Productive Coughs: Nocturnal tickling cough which can potentially keep you awake during the night and can be described as a ‘dry, barking cough’.
